Everywhere you look, you hear about the craze of social networking for staying connected, building a business, and also finding potential partners (business partners of course). I use social networking to stay connected, to make new connections, share valuable information with others, and to find out what others are up to in the process of building relationships.

What are peoples greatest challenges in their  small /mid size enterprises?

People are looking to find the right new partners to do business with as well to expand and grow their own business in an ever-changing environment.

There are other ways to keep connected outside of social networking, so I will spotlight a few of each to get you started.

Facebook

This is one of the most popular social networking sites that are out there. You can create a profile, post pictures, host an event, join groups that interest you, and build your friend list. And with that build your business with “attraction marketing.” Attracting like minded individuals. You may here people jokingly say “Will you be my friend?” when referencing Facebook or Myspace.  You can also update your status to let people know what you are up to, and comment on what other people are doing or talking about. This is one of the fastest ways to generate good quality leads as well to bring your business to yet another level.

Twitter

This is the latest buzz on the internet. Twitter is basically a site for micro-blogging, all you can do is send out 140 character ” tweets” to the people who are following you. On this site you don’t have friends, you have followers. You want to follow important people in your industry and get in conversations with them through twitter. You use the @ replies to converse back and forth or you can send a direct private message if they are also following you. Twitter has a whole new language from twitteriffic, twitterville, my tweeps, and so on.  If twitter sounds a little overwhelming, don’t worry there are plenty of free resources to help you to get started. It is the fastest way to inform others about “hot” news to thousands and thousands of people.

Linked In

This site appears to be more professional than Facebook or Twitter and is great for professional connections, referrals and major networking. One thing I have noticed is that you don’t see as many people updating their personal status on Linked In as you do on the other sites. Also, this site does not allow you to randomly go around “befriending” people who you do not know. It is fantastic way to build solid relationships over the time with other like minded individuals.

The idea of “Linked In” is to link people together that do know each other and then ask for an introduction to someone you want to meet. For example, you want to meet Izabela Lundberg, president of a global company in town, if you look at her profile you can tell that you are just a few connections away from getting introduced to her. The idea is that you will get introduced to someone in a “warm” way and make the connection easier and very effective.

Ezine

Electronic newsletters are another great way to stay in touch with your contacts. There are a few golden rules in having an Ezine though.  First, never add anyone onto your newsletter list that did not ask to be added, since that is considered as a spam. Also, make sure that people can opt out easily if they want to. Be consistent in your efforts, if you commit to doing a bi-weekly newsletter then be prepared to send it out every two weeks. Start monthly if it feels a little overwhelming at first. It is important to keep momentum going and build upon your existing following.

Also, be sure to use a contact database system, don’t use Outlook or your regular inbox to deliver electronic newsletters, since most of these will get sent to spam and will never be seen. While this may seem like a lot of work, I recommend you start with one of these social networking systems and one database system and go from there.

Whenever and wherever you can – automate! Save your self time and money. Master one or two of these social media vehicles and then keep building on. Do not let your self to get overwhelmed or stressed out.

To your massive success,

Izabela Lundberg
